aaaaa“Bhikkhus, there are these four floods. What four?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaThe flood of sensuality,
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaThe flood of existence,
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaThe flood of views,
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaThe flood of ignorance.

These are the four floods. This Noble Eightfold Path is to be developed for direct knowledge of these four floods, for the full understanding of them, for the total ending of them, and for the abandoning of them. What Noble Eightfold Path? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops Right View, which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in release. He develops Right Intention, which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in release. He develops Right Speech, which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in release. He develops Right Action, which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in release. He develops Right Livelihood, which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in release. He develops Right Effort, which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in release. He develops Right Mindfulness, which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in release. He develops Right Concentration, which is based upon seclusion, based upon dispassion, based upon cessation, maturing in release. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu develops and cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path for direct knowledge of these four floods, for the full understanding of them, for the total ending of them, and for the abandoning of them.”
